The DEVIL
69.5 x 54.5 cm, drawn on an antique map, handmade paper, mixed media, natural pigments, acrylic & watercolor, 2025
Self-Confidence, Seduction, Temptation, Attraction, Responsibility
In the background, a historical map of the city of Erfurt (1717) references the positioning of forces within the earthly realm. At the center stands a wine glass entwined by a snake – a symbol of temptation, indulgence, and the power of sensual allure. The grapes in the glass signify abundance and seduction, while the snake represents both knowledge and danger.
The hand gesture at the lower edge of the composition points to free will and personal agency. Dynamic lines traverse the work, reflecting the attraction and entanglements associated with the theme of the Devil. The color palette of violet and gold emphasizes the contrast between sensual depth and spiritual insight.
Astrologically, the card is associated with Capricorn and the planet Saturn. The element of Earth, the rune Uruz, and the number 15 point to manifestation, endurance, and inner strength, as well as attachments and shadow aspects.
This interpretation of “The Devil” explores themes of seduction, self-limitation, and the illusion of external power – while also highlighting the possibility of conscious liberation and personal responsibility.
