DEATH
69.5 x 54.5 cm, drawn on an antique map, handmade paper, mixed media, natural pigments, acrylic & watercolor, 2025
Transformation, Transition, Renewal
In the background, a historical map of the Duchy of Lorraine (circa 1690) alludes to the timeless dimension of change. At the center, two stylized hands appear: one open – a symbol of letting go – and the other holding a fading candle, a rose, and a shimmering crystal sphere. This composition reflects the moment of transition: the passing of the old and the emergence of the new.
The red line coursing through the work symbolizes the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Symbols such as Scorpio, the number 13, the rune Eihwaz, and the Ouroboros — the serpent devouring its own tail — refer to transformation, protection, and the passage between “old” and “new.”
The extinguishing candle stands for the end of a cycle, while the rose – a symbol of the soul and renewal – points to life awakening anew.
The skeletal motifs along the arms emphasize impermanence as a natural part of existence.
“Death” is not portrayed here as an ending, but as a necessary process of transformation – the conscious release of the past to create space for liberation, growth, and new perspectives.
